Notes for Julia Ann Marvel:

According to notes that I found at the Danville, Indiana pubilic library. Julia owned a farm which was located what is now 34th and High School road. Above her land was her daughter’s farm Sarah E. Jones Tomlinson and across from Julia’s farm was Andrew Jackson Jones’s farm. Charles Jones had a farm in the same area.
According to the information sheet that I received from the Danville, Indiana Public Library it states:

“Julia Ann Marvel was born in 1829 in Muskingum County, Ohio. she married Robert Dickerson on April 13, 1848. They were the parents of two children: Georgea, who died January 28, 1860 and Charles E. Dickerson. Robert Dickerson died March 4, 1856 and is buried at Crown Point Cemetery off Old Wilson Road in Marion county, Ind. Georgea is buried beside her father. Julia Ann and Robert Dickerson lived on Mississippi Street in Indianapolis near the State House. They lived over a store that the time was being used by the Masons. After Robert’s death, Julia Ann remained there for awhile; she over heard the entire Masonic Ritual as the results, she was accepted into the Masonic Lodge, one of two women to ever belong to all male Masonic Lodge. This information has been in history books taught to school children some years ago. To confirm this: Julia Nelson Studebaker, great granddaughter of Julia Ann, discussed this information with the Masonic Lodge at Illinois Street and they admitted they had heard of Julia Ann as a member, but it was not entered into the early meetings. Later on, Mr. James Buchancan Watts, presented Ada Jones, as the granddaughter of Julia Ann Marvel Dickerson, woman member of the Masonic Lodge of Indianapolis. Julia Ann Marvel Dickerson married a second time to John Jones, a wealthy bachelor, on October 29, 1859.
They were the parents of three children: Elizabeth, Sarah E. and Andrew Jackson Jones.
Julia owned a farm which was located what is now 34th and High School road; above her land was her daughter’s farm Sarah E. Jones Tomlinson and above Sarah’s was Julia’s son Andrew Jackson Jones’s farm. Across from Julia Ann farm, was her son Charles E. Dickerson farm. Julia took care of her father, Robert Marvel, until his death; at this time she lived in Pike township, Marion County, Ind. Julia Ann and her husband, John Jones are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery off 38th Street, Indianapolis, Ind. The grave is situated across from President Harrison’s grave site.

George W. Marvel came to Indiana in 1834 with his parents Robert and Sarah Marvel. He was raised on his father’s pioneer farm. His first marriage was to Sarah Dickerson. They settled on their own farm and raised 6 children. George ended up owning 155 acres in Brown township, Hendrick County. He worked as a plasterer while farming his land. Sarah Dickerson Marvel is buried beside her three daughters, Margaret, Ettie, and Clara in the Crownpoint cemetery off of Old Wilson Rd, in Marion county, Indiana. George married a second wife Lucinda Watson in Vigo County, Indiana on November 7, 1875.
George and Lucinda are buried at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Brownsburg, Indiana.

Mr. Marvel has a fine farm and excellent improvements.

George W. Marvel is a native of Muskingum County, Ohio, born April 29, 1831, a son of Robert and Sarah Marvel, who came to Hendricks County, Indiana in 1835, and entered eighty acres of wild land in Brown Township. Here he was reared on a pioneer farm, receiving but a limited education. he is one of the prosperous citizens of Brown Township, and owns 155 acres of valuable land. When a young man he learned the plasterer’s trade, at which he has worked in connection with farming. Mr. Marvel was married in March, 1852, to Sarah Dickerson, and to them were born six children, but three of whom – Franklin P., Ottie M., and Rosa M. – are living. Margaret, Ettie and Clara are deceased. Mrs. Marvel died in May, 1875, and the following October Mr. Marvel married Lucinda Watson, of Vigo County, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. Marvel are members of the Christian church.

Notes for David James Marvel:

David Marvel moved with his family to Indiana in 1835 from Ohio. In the Spring of 1870, he moved his family to Lewis Township, Clay County, Indiana. In Clay County, coal mining was going strong. David and many of his sons worked in the area coal mines for several years.

“ David J. Marvel, farmer and plasterer, is the third of the children of Robert and Sarah (Williams) (really Wilkins) Marvel, natives of Delaware. David was born near Centerville, Ohio, June 10,1831., whence his parents came to this State in 1833, and settled in Hendricks County, where our subject resided until 1867, when he removed to Iowa, thence returned to Indiana, and in the spring of 1870 settled on the farm on which he now lives. He was reared on a farm, and lived with his parents until he was twenty-two years of age, with but little schooling – perhaps three months in all – yet he has acquired a practical education by observation and experience. February 16, 1854, he married Amanda Brown, a union favored with ten children – Sarah, Mary F., Victoria May, Joanna M., Ada (deceased), Louie J. (deceased), Sylvester P., Dora May, William Morton and Robert Winfred. September, 1862, he enlisted in Company K, Seventy-ninth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry: served one year and was discharged for disability, after having participated in all the battles from Louisville to Cumberland Gap. In his youth he learned the plasterer’s trade, at which he works occasionally still. In politics, Mr. Marvel is a Republican, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church.”
David James Marvel died of Carbuncle on his left shoulder. Also between his left shoulder and neck. He was treated by Dr. J.W. Davis.
The children and their birthdates is supplied by Mary Chestnut during a deposition for the a claim of pension increase for her father David J. Marvel. This is dated July 11, 1899. She stated that there existed a framed record of the births of the family. It was in the possession of Willliam Morton Marvel.
During the deposition, Mary stated “that her father and mother were married either in Boone – Marion Co. or Hendricks Co. Indiana. They lived near the border line of those counties. They were married at Levi Brown’s – father of my mother Amanda Brown. Neither had been married before they married each other. They never divorsed and they were never separated until Death.”
David J. Marvel enlisted in the Company K of the 79th Indiana Regiment of Vol. Infantry on August 21, 1862 to serve 3 years. According to the Certificate of Disability for Discharge – “he was born in Centerville in the State of Ohio is 29 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer.” Dated August 31 st , 1863. Signed by Henry A. Mitchel at Loisville, Ky.
According to the Declaration for Invalid Army Pension that I obtained at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The declaration was dated July 30, 1864:

On this 30th of July A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty four personally appeared before me, William Wallace Clerk of the Circuit Court within and for the county and State aforesaid, David J. Marvel aged 32 years, a resident of Royalton in the county of Boone in the State of Indiana who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical David J. Marvel who enlisted in the service of the United States on the 2 nd day of September in the year 1862, as a Private in company K commanded by Captain Joseph Jordon in the 79 Regiment of Indiana Vol. Infantry in the war of 1861, and was honorably discharged at Louisville on the 31 day of August in the year 1863: that while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty at a place called Louisville in the State of Kentucky on the 20th day of September 1862, he was disabled as follows, to-wit:
He was taken sick with a Bowel complaint at Louisville Ky. he left said place for Glaser Ky with the Regt. w/wn his arrival thus he was immediated stricken down with the Dysentary and sent back to Hospital No. 9 at Louisville Ky where he remained about a month then transfered to the Hospital No. 8 at New Albany, Ind.where he remained about two months then returned to the Regt at Murfreesboro Tenn where he remained about three months being unable to do any service on account of his Dysentary he was sent to the field hospital where he remained about a month then sent to Nashville, Tenn Hospital No. 7. his Dysentary became Chronic, re remained in said hospital about a month then sent back to No. 7 Hospital Louisville, Ky where he was discharged from the service. Since discharge he has been unable to perform any manual labor he is almost reduced to a skeleton. his chronic Diarrhea remains unabated, is hardly able to get about.

Several depositions were taken during the years 1864 to 1899, Most stated that he had Sunstroke and chronic Diarehea .

Dickinson is plaintiff and John Marvel and Mary Marvel are defendants requiring me to make the sum of two thousand two hundred and eighty-nine dollars and ninety-seven cents. ($2289.97), interest and costs. I will expose at public sale to the hightest bidder on Saturday, the 22nd day of May 1897 between the hours of ten o’clock a.m. and four o’clock p.m. of said day, at the door of the court house of Hendricks county, Indiana, the rents and profits for a term not exceeding seven years of the following decribed real estate towit: The north-west quarter of the north-west quarter of section twenty , township….. “John Marvel grew up on his father’s farm and always devoted his attention to agriculture. He was one of the successful farmers of Brown Township. He married Mary L. Wilson in 1859. They bought an 80 acre farm and the improvements they made on it were among the best in the township. It was just north of his father’s farm and 40 acres of it is now a part of the De Wiltt Brown place on the north side of 56th Street and the other 40 is now on the south side of 86th Street owned by Mr. Oertly. Mr. and Mrs. John Marvel had eight children, among whom were Annie and Everett. Annie married Frank Gardner and Everett marred Alice Mark, a school teacher. She taught in several of the one-room schools of the township. The had three children, Elsie (Mrs. Gus White of 322 North Green Street, Brownsburg), Clarence Marvel of Wilson Road, and Elnora (Mrs. Clarence Vice of Brownsburg). John Marvel was a well known horse breeder. He was so proud of the crops he raised that he always entered them at the Indiana State Fair which he attended every year. His garden produce and grains of the field won him many blue ribbons and premiums. The family were members of the Macedonia M.E. Church, John died on his farm at the age of 75 years”

Danville, Indiana – Over the County The home of John Marvel, three miles southeast of Brownsburg, burned Sunday, April 16. All the contents were burned as no one was at home. Marvel had about $900 of insurance. The origin of the fire is unknown.

Obituary of Mrs. Mary M. Hough – from the Brownsburg Record dated Friday January 28, 1927 Mrs. Mary M. Hough Mary M., daughter of Robert and Sarah Marvel, was born January 27, 1843, in Hendricks County, Indina and died January 18, 1927 at the home of her son Albert at Indianapolis, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 23 days. She was united in marriage to George W. Hough in July 1867, soon after the close of the Civil War. To this union was born 7 children all of whom are living, Wille, Albert, Fred, Laura Herring, Sallie Beasley, Minnie Eck, and Isa (Icy) Wilson. Her husband
having preceded her in death almost 20 years ago. She was next to the youngest of a large family, all of whom have preceded her in death. She was a charter member of the first Sunday School class of Macedonia and in young woman-hood cast her membership with that church. Besides these children she leaves to mourn her departure, 23 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral Services were conducted by Eld. R. A. Fuson from the M.E. Church at 11:00 a.m. last Thursday.

Josiah ‘Joseph’ B. Marvel
Marvel, Joseph, P.O. Box Trader’s Point, Marion County,; Farmer, section 30; born June 25, 1845; Son of Robert and Nancy Marvel. Married December 31, 1863 to Miss Wilson, of this township; four children: Charles E. and Ida E. (twins), born 9 25 1864 ; Mary A. born 12 29, 1867; Cora L, born 12 27, 1870. Mr. Marvel served in the 7th Ind. Vols. Is now engaged in clearing a farm for himself in the woods. He has a fine family of children, and is a worthy citizen. Josiah Marvel was a non-commissioned officer in – private – in the Seventh Indiana Infantry for three years. Company H – Josiah was eighteen when he enlisted in the 7th Indiana Regiment of Indiana. While in Cumberland, Maryland, he contracted typhoid fever, which developed into rheumatism and chronic diarrhea. He was honorable dischared on July 1, 1862. He returned to Hendricks County and again began farming.
The 7th Indiana saw service throughout the Civil War in the Eastern Theater, especially in the (Shenandoah) Valley Campaign, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

According to the Indiana State Digital Archives – Military Records – Civil War – Statewide – Josiah Marvel enlisted at the age of 18 on 09/12/1861 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was discharged 07/01/1862. He was a member of Regiment 7 Company H.

Mrs. Nancy Marvel Dies

Brownsburg Woman, 86, Spent Entire Life in Hendricks County. Mrs. Nancy Marvel, age eighty-six, a lifelong resident of Hendricks county, died Thursday at her home in Brownsburg. The funeral was held Friday at 2 p.m. at her home in Brownsburg and burial was in he Brownsburg cemetery. She is survived by five children, Charley and Harlan Marvel and Mrs. Ida Ruse, Mrs. Alice Wilson and Mrs. Cora Weaver, eighteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren.

NANCY MARVEL
Nancy Wilson, daughter of John and Sarah Wilson, was born in Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. Oct 4, 1843. She was one of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceded her in death, except one, Angeline of the soldiers Home in Lafayette. She lived at the family home with her parents until her marriage to Josiah Marvel on Dec. 31, 1863. To this union was born five children, Ida Ruse and Cora Weaver of Indianapolis, Alice Wilson and Charlie of Brownsburg and Harlen of Traders Point. In their early married life she with her husband united with the Old Ebenezer Christian Church at Trader’s Point, but after moving to Brownsburg in 1903, they moved their membership to the Christian Church here. The husband died almost sixteen years ago, since which time she has lived alone. She had been in failing health for some time but had been able to be around the house until last Saturday when she fell, fracturing her arm. Her feable condition could not stand the shock and she gradually grew worse until she passed away, Thursday morning Nov. 14 at 4:30 aged 86 years, 1 month and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her departure five children, eighteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

HESTER ANN MARVEL (Robert1 III) was born 1849 in Hendricks County, Indiana. She died before the 1860 Census was taken. I can not find any death certificate nor burial information at this time.

Mrs. Marvel Dead
Louie May, daughter of Ira J. and Malissa H. McDaniel, was born on a farm 1 1/2 miles north of Brownsburg, Indiana, on the 6th day of May, 1864. Died February 9th, 1933, at 1:30 a.m. being 68 years, 9 months, 3 days old at the time of death. She moved with her parents to Fayette, Ind., when 4 years of age. Was married to Frank Marvel on January 6th, 1887. To this union was born one son, who died in infancy. She had been in poor health for more than 12 years, and was a quiet and patient sufferer till death called her to her last home. She leaves the husband and one brother, Spicer A. McDaniel, of near Springfield, Missouri, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held at the late home Friday at 10 a.m. conducted by William Wright. Interment was in Arbuckle cemetery.

Zionsville – Genevieve M. Simms died April 19 at Village Christain Park in Zionsville. She was 94 and had resided in Zionsville for the past five years. Born April 5, 1906 in Brownsburg, she was a daughter of Leonzo Simms and Rosa Marvel. Mrs. Simms was a beautician at Approved Beauty Salon in Clermont for 40 years before retiring in 1993. She was a member of Traders Point Christian Church in Indianapolis. Survivors include nieces, Bonita Wilson of Bradenton, Florida, Eva Enders of Franklin, Rose Marie Bushman of Reynolds and Retta Mae Simms of Lebanon; nephews, Hubert Junior Glidewell of Speedway, Leon Glidewell of Del Ray Beach, Florida, and Russell Simms, of Lebanon. Services were held April 23 at Traders Point Christian Church. Nelson Roetter officiated. Interment was at Brownsburg Cemetery. Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg handled arrangements.

According to the 1920 Census – Victoria May Marvel Parish was committed to the Southeastern Hospital for the Insane.- located in Madison Township in Jefferson County, Indiana – Also according to her death certificate Victoria suffered from Dementia at the time of her death.

“The Southeastern Indiana Hospital for the Insane began accepting patients August 23, 1910. The approximately 600 patients were transported ..from Central State Hospital in Indianapolis by train. Guards who stood watch over them carried shotguns loaded with rock salt….. mental patients had been “warehoused” in huge buildings (in the past). But the new, enlightened view of “:moral treatment” current in the early 20th century was that disturbed minds could be restored to sanity in a beautiful, peaceful and accepting environment such as the new state hospital offered, with it breathtaking view of the Ohio River Valley. The breaking up of the patients’ housing into smaller buildings, known as the “cottage plan,” also was aimed at more humane treatment of the mentally ill and at trying to restore them to sanity.”

Sylvester Marvel, 47, … miner employed in the (Freeman mine) … mine nine miles northwest of (Coalmont was) killed Tuesday afternoon …. o’clock when crushed (between) the car and walls of a (mine shaft). … was broken and his ribs. Marvel got on the car (with a ) load of coal, according to (the mine) engineer and gave the …. It is thought that after (a call from a) pal, he reached over (….) water off the car. (He failed to) regain his balance, the (….) holsted and he fell be(tween) of the cage and the car. (unknown) signal to stop, but would (….) workmen arrived. The (body was taken) to the Ryan chapel and (taken ) home at 424 South Second St. he is survived by ( 2 ) sons, four daughters, (2) brothers, five sisters.

Lester P. Marvel, 46 years old, 1100 South First Street, died at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis. a veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Lawton-Byrum Post, V.V.W. surviving are the widow, Hazel, three step-daughters, Mrs. Katherine Shake, Mrs. Frances Hensley and Mrs. Carolyn Atterson, all of Terre Haute; four sisters, Mrs. Lota Schmidt, and Mrs. Chloe Boles, both of Sullivan, Mrs. Trella Anderson of Terre Haute and Mrs. Anna Atterson of Paris, Ill.,; a brother James of Paris, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. The body was brought to the Callahan Funeral Home and was to be returned to the residence at 5 o’clock Wednesday evening. Funeral services will be held there at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon with Rev. Clarence Loveland officiating. Lawton-Byrum Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct graveside military rites in Highland Lawn cemetery.

Coalmont Man, 79, Is Called By Death

William Mort Marvel, 79 years old, of Coalmont, died at 12:20 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the St. Anthony’s hospital at Terre Haute. He had been a patient at the hospital for only three days. Mr. Marvel had resided in the Coalmont community for many years. For the past two years he had made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Bickel. He also had resided for a few years at Mishawaka, after his wife preceded him in death. He is survived by the daughter,Mrs. Bickel; two other daughters, Mrs. Hazel Miller and Mrs. Sadie Armstrong, both of Terre Haute, and his sons, Virgil and Wilbur Marvel of South Bend, Orvil, Oscar and Larry Marvel of Mishawaka and Hugh Marvel of Whiting.
The body of the deceased was taken to the McClanahan Funeral home in Jasonville and was later removed to the Bubb Funeral home in Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at Mishawaka and burial with be made at that city.

Funeral services for James Albert Hough, age fifty-two, who died at his home, 728 North Pershing avenue, Saturday, will be held at the home at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. Mr. Hough had lived in Indianapolis for thirty years, and was proprietor of a lunchroom at 2106 West Michigan street. He operated a lunchroom in Haughville for a number of years, and formerly was employed as a brakeman by the Big Four railroad. Death followed an illness of five weeks. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Fanny M. Hough, and a daughter, Miss Blanche Hough, both of Indianapolis, four sisters, Mrs. Laura Herring of Brownsburg; Mrs. Sally Beasley, of Pittsboro; Mrs. Minnie Eck, of Southport, and Mrs. Icy Wilson, of Brownsburg; two brothers, William Hough, of Brownsburg and Fred Hough, of Indianapolis; a niece, Mrs. Thomas Crahan, of Indianapolis, and a nephew, Albert Alexander, of Los Angeles.

Allie Wilson, as she was known to most of us, was reared in this community and was the daughter of the Joseph and Nancy Marvel. She was preceded in death by her husband in the year 1921. She was an active member of the local Christian Church and a friend to everyone. She is survived by three sons, Guy Wilson of Zionsville, Harlin Wilson of Davenport, Iowa, Raymond Wilson of Brownsburg in whose home she died , one daughter Mrs. Grace Smith of Speedway City, ten grandchildren, one brother, Harlin Marvel of Traders Point and one sister Mrs. Cora Weaver of this place. Interment was made in Greenlawn Cemetery

CORRESPONDENCE Pittsboro Our implement dealer, W. Clay Weaver and Miss Cora L. Marvel were united in marriage last Sunday evening at the residence of the bride’s father. The brothers and sisters of the bride and bridegroom were all that were present. Rev. Nathanial Gossett offficiating. Long may they live together in peace and harmony, is the wish of all who know them. They will at once go to housekeeping in our quiet little village.

Walter Clay Weaver, formerly of Pittsboro, graduated from the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons in Indianapolis Thursday night. He is well known in this county, especially in the northern part. He was born in Hoopaton, Illinois, Dec. 27, 1868. The following year his father moved to near Pittsboro. There he grew up to young manhood, giving his undivided attention to his father’s farm work, attending the county school four or five months in the year, as circumstances would permit. During his school days he acted as correspondent for several papers. Mr. Weaver entered the pump business in Pittsboro, giving his whole attention to this business, making it a success and adding year by year to his lines until he became well known throughout his section as one of the leading businesmen. He was married in 1890 to Miss Clara L. Marvel and to them three children have been born. After a few years in business his health became impaired and he concluded to change his vocation Disposing of his business he entered medical college in 1898. Having limited means he was obliged to make the best of his opportunities. He and his faithful wife labored very hard during vacation to provide sufficient means to keep him in college yet sometimes extra labor was needed before term was completed. Mr. Weaver is certainly entitled to the title of being a self-made man. It is Dr. Weaver’s intention to locate in Indianapolis for the practice of his profession and his many friends in this county predict for him great success.

Weaver W. Clay Weaver, son of E. M. Weaver county recorder, died at his home near Pittsboro, Thursday morning, from a complication of diseases, in his 38th year. A widow, who is a daughter of Joseph Marvel, survives with three children. The funeral was Saturday morning with interment at Greenlawn cemetery at Brownsburg. Mr. Weaver was a man of many excellent parts and struggled bravely for health. He was in the implement trade at Pittsboro for many years and later graduated in medicine, but failing health caused him to return to the country. For some years he was the faithful representative of this paper at Pittsboro.

HARLEN HARPER3 MARVEL (Josiah ‘Joseph’ B.2, Robert1 III) was born on 10 Oct 1879 in Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. He died on 03 Mar 1946 in Rural, Marion, Indiana. (Age: 67).
