Descendants of Reuben Steininger

First Generation

1.  Reuben Steininger, son of George B Steininger and Catherine Walter, was born on 12 Feb 1831 in Schneidersville, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, died on 9 Feb 1903 in Fulton County, Indiana at age 71, and was buried in Feb 1903 in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana.

Reuben Steininger was born in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania in the year of 1831.  His marriage was to Sophia Walters to which were born 6 children – 5 sons and 1 daughter who was the youngest.  There was one son who was not born to Sophia but was the oldest of the seven children of Reuben Steininger.  The children follow in age sequence that they were born and their occupations.  -(1) Charles Steininger (2)- Henry – Carpenter – (3) Howard – Preacher/Farmer (4) George – Preacher (5) Franklin – Farmer (6) Milo Irvin – Farmer  (7) Catherine Luella.

The following was written by Clarence L. Hiatt on May 17, 1993

”  Reuben and Sophia Steininger were born in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania near the Susquehanna River at a small town of Sunbury and near Selinsgrove.  Prior to his marriage to Sophia Walters, he was married and had a son Charles Steininger.  After his first wife’s death, he then married Sophia.  He and Sophia emigrated to Indiana with their 2 oldest sons.  Henry William (Heinrich Wilhelm) and Howard.  Reubens parents were born in Southern Germany.  The remainder of Rueben and Sophia’s children were born in Indiana.  About 7 1/2 miles Northwest of Rochester , Rueben was a farmer and also a carpenter.

They traveled to Indiana by wagon drawn by horses.  Charles Steininger did not accompany them.  At the time of their move the two eldest boys Henry and Howard accompanied them. The remainder of the children, namely, George, Frank, Milo and Lulu were born in Indiana.

They settled in Fulton County, Richland Township and on the Tippecanoe River all of which were 7 miles Northwest of Rochester and 5 miles east of Leiters Ford in Aubbeenaubbe Township.

The house and barn, which he built, are still standing and in good repair today.  He also was instrumental in building a church (South Germany) which no longer stands.  A cemetery where most of the Steininger’ s were interred, marks the place where the church stood.

Coming from Germany, they naturally spoke German and also taught it to all of their children and in turn was taught to part of their grandchildren.  I consider myself very fortunate as the only one left that can speak (Dutch) German.  (signed – Clarence L. Hiatt)”

Sold $20 In A Rag Bag.

One of Fulton county’s model citizens is Reuben Steininger, who lives peacefully and comfortably on his farm near Germany Ford, on the Tippecanoe (River).  Reuben is not a capitalist but he always kees a small reserv e fund on hand and he keeps it out of reach of pilferers.  Last week he had twenty dollars in currency and as he didn’t care to carry it with him he hid it at the bottom of a rag bag.  While he was out about the farm a rag buyer came along and purchased the contents of the rag bag.  One member of the family carried the bag out and dumped the contents into the rag wagon when a neatly wraped package fell out from the bottom of the bag.  It was unwrapped and the contents was Mr. Steininger’s twenty dollars which was duly returned to him.

Wabash Plain Dealer:

Rev. Steininger, a minister of the Evangelical denomination, whose assignment is to Oak Park and Compton Hill, was caught by Fish Warden Sala, of Vincennes, on Lake Wawasee, Monday night, engaged in illegal fishing.  Sala has been at the lake several days disguised as a farm hand and lay in wait for violators of the law.  The boat containing the minister pushed off the shore and Sala and his assistants gave chase in another and rounded the offenders to with a rifle shot.  Their boat contained a new two-hundred foot seine.  Steininger promised to appear in court when wanted and was release.  He is an able man and widely known in northern Indiana church circles.

From the Daily News-Democrat (Huntington, Indiana), Edition page 1

…  Rev. H. Steininger, pastor of the Evangelical church at Logansport and formerly pastor in this city, was slightly injured in a thrilling runaway Monday.  The reverend gentleman was driving down a steep incline in a light road wagon.  The horse took frieght and started to run .  The wagon swinging from side to side struck a tree in front of Tete Nave’s grocery and the horse in his fury to get free, overturned the buggy and spilled the minister into the street.  Rev. Steininger was not much hurt, only sustaining a few bruises.

Obituary for Howard Steininger from the Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Indiana

Thursday, July 3, 1919

Details of the horrible accident which resulted in the death of Howard STEININGER, 56, at Beebee, Ark., were related Thursday by Chauncey HIATT and Forest STEININGER, who returned Wednesday evening with the body, via Logansport. It appears that Steininger took a team to his barn, which was some distance from the house, about noon on Saturday, June 28. When he did not appear in the evening, a search was made and his almost lifelike and unrecognizable body was found in a mule’s stall, under the animal’s feet. One leg was broken in two places, one ear was off, several ribs were broken, practically all of his clothes were torn off, and his body was a mass of cuts and bruises. He lived until Sunday morning. Besides the widow, a son and two daughters in Redlands, Calif., there survive a daughter, Mrs. Charles FISHER, of Beebee, who with her husband, returned with the body; two sons, Irvin [STEININGER], of Auburn , and Forest [STEININGER], of near Rochester; a sister, Mrs. Chauncey HIATT, and two brothers, Henry [STEININGER] and Milo [STEININGER], all of near Rochester, and a brother, Frank [STEININGER], of Copemish , Mich. Rev. Geo. C. TREAT SIX-YEAR-OLD ORATOR

Master Irving J. Steininger Interest a Peru Audience.

Peru, Ind., Sept. 27 – Master Irving Jay Steininger, the wonderful “boy orator,” appeared here Friday evening at the opera house.  He was suffering from a severe headache, and when somewhat advanced in the repetition of his temperance lecture he was for a time bewildered with the pain, and had to take a short rest.  He finished the piece, and also delivered a recitation entitled “Babies.”  The large audience was wild in its applause.

Speaks Only What Is Taught Him

He is really a wonder.  The father of the boy, Howard Steininger, is a n ordinary looking man, a farmer, living near Rochester.  Irving repeats only those sermons, recitations, etc., which his father has taught him.  His sermons and speeches are mostly composed by the father from his own and borrowed ideas, and while not being any easier for the child to learn, give an orginal tone to the performances.  His 6th birthday occurred this month.

At about the age of 5, Irvin was giving speeches in many nearby states and became known as the “Hoosier Boy Orator”.

Lloyd Steininger, 11 years of age, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Steininger of this city, accidently shot and killed himself, Monday evening at seven o’clock at the home of his grandparents at Battle Creek, Mich.  A telephone message to local relatives received last night, gave scant details of the fatality.  The lad was playing with several other boys in the neighborhood where the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sultz, reside, and in some unaccountable manner the 22 caliber rifle handled by Lloyd was discharged, the bullet entering his head directly below the nose.  Screams from his companions soon brought members of the family to the scene of the accident, and the injured lad was rushed to a Battle Creek hospital where he died four hours later.

Mr. Steininger, who is employed at the carpenter’s trade at Battle Creek, left Rochester last Friday morning accompanied by his wife and family who were to spend a few weeks’ visit with the latter’s parents, Mr . and Mrs George Sultz, of Battle Creek, before returning to their home on North Fulton avenue, this city.  The dreadful news was accompanied by the information that the Steiningers would arrive in Rochester at 2:07 over the Erie, Wednesday afternoon, with their son’s body. Further stating that the funeral would be held at the Church of God, this city, on Thursday afternoon, with internment to be made at the South Germany cemetery.  Besides his parents, the unfortunate youth is survived by two younger brothers, Herschel and Paul, and two sisters Nettie and Aria May,  The father, Arile Steininger had for many years been an employee of the Rochester Lumber Company.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Olive Bethel church for Larry KINDIG, 19, R.R. 2, Akron, who became Fulton countys first drowning victim in four years Tuesday evening. The boy and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byron KINDIG, were fishing on Mudor Barr lake on the Gaston Coplen farm 7 1/2 miles northeast of Rochester and four miles northwest of Akron in Newcastle township when the tragedy occurred at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The youth, who was crippled, and his parents were fishing in a small rowboat. Mrs. Kindig, who was sitting in the bow of the boat, shifted her weight in the boat to get a different position, causing the boat to capsize. Mrs. Kindig grabbed onto the boat and Kindig grabbed a hold of the boat with one hand and his son, by the tee shirt which the son was wearing, with the other.

Harold Van DOREN, R.R. 2, Akron, and George SMITH, R.R. 2, Akron, who were fishing nearby rushed to help the family. When Van Doren reached the scene, the father, who was nearly exhausted from trying to hold on to the boat and his son both, was going under the water’s surface. Van Doren grabbed frantically and caught hold of the father’s hair. At the same instant the father lost his grip on his son. Van Doren managed to get the struggling father into the boat. Smith in the meantime had taken the mother into his boat. The two hosts carrying the panic-stricken parents went to the shore, and Van Doren ran to the Ransford PETERSON residence about one-half mile from the lake to call the sheriff. By the time Van Doren reached the house he was out of breath, and Peterson called the sheriff’s department at 6:43 o’clock.

Sheriff Willard CLARK and Special Deputy Richard BAIR, 915 Franklin street, rushed to the fire department to obtain grappling hooks, at which time they notified the fire department of the accident. Firemen started for the scene with their resuscitation equipment. In the meantime the sheriff’s department contacted the state police and Conservation officer Ray REKER. Upon the sheriff’s department arrival at the scene three boats immediately began the search for the submerged youth. In one boat there was Bair and Bud MOORE, Athens, who was at the scene. Van Doren and Paul KINDIG, the drowned boy’s brother, were in the second and in the third boat was the boy’s father and Sheriff Clark. Bair was using the grappling hook, and located the body at 7:25 o’clock. The three boats had made only three passes over the area where they believed the body to be located. The body was found between 40 and 50 feet offshore in 18 feet of water. After Bair found the body, Clark and the father put it in their boat and the father rowed the boat to shore.

Rochester firemen who were at the scene attempted to revive the youth, but failed to do so and the boy was pronounced dead at 7:40 o’clock by Fulton county coroner, Dr. Howard ROWE, who was assisted by deputy coroner Lyman BA KER. Firemen assisting at the scene were Chief Bud BRAMAN, John RICHARDS, George CLARK and Gene MELTON. State police at the scene assisted the sheriff’s department in getting all of the details of the drowning .

The death brought the total of accidental deaths in Fulton county to 17 persons in 1960. Larry Kindig was born Sept. 7, 1940, in Fulton county to Byron and Mildred STEININGER KINDIG. He was a member of the Olive Bethel Church of God. Surviving are the parents, at home, and two brothers, the Rev. Clifford KINDIG, Lebanon, and Paul [KINDIG], at home. The Rev. Hubert JOHNSTON and the Rev. Carl OVERHOLSER will officiate at the services and burial will be at the Mt. Hope cemetery in Athens. Friends may call at the Haupert funeral home in Akron after 2 p.m . Thursday until noon Friday.

Obituary found on Find A Grave

Ernest “Ernie” Hiatt died Oct. 21, 2015, after a battle with cancer.

He did so much to add to the quality of life in Fulton County and influenced so many people I felt that he should be memorialized by someone who knew him for many years. I attended Woodrow Elementary School with his wife Carolyn, so I feel moved to tell his story. My sons camped at Ernie’s farm when in Boy Scouts in the 1970s. So Bill and I have been friends with Ernie for most of our lives.

Ernie was born June 3, 1934, to Clarence and Charlotte Hiatt on a far m in Richland Township, Fulton County. He was a lifelong resident of Richland Township. As a young man he helped his family at the Farmers Market in South Bend, taking chickens and produce there to sell.

Ernie graduated from Richland Center High School in 1952. He joined U. S. Naval Reserves on April 10, 1952, at age 17. Sheriff Laurence Norris had to sign to show that he had no arrests in order for him to join underage. He graduated from Great Lakes Naval Base Oct. 3, 1952, cam e home and married Carolyn Woods on Oct. 5, 1952. They were married 6 3 years. He served 16 years but never went overseas. The last six year s were spent as a recruiter in South Bend. He was honorably discharge d in 1969.

He operated his Hiatt Electric Company at Leiter’s Ford 1956-1975 when he moved the business to his home and continued until recently.

A lifetime Boy Scout member, Scoutmaster and executive, Ernie was awarded the Silver Beaver, was in Order of the Arrow and was a trainer for Wood badge leaders.

An outgoing person, Ernie joined many organizations: Masonic Lodge for 50 years, American Legion and Moose Lodge and Scottish Rite, in which he was a lifetime member. He was also in Rochester Kiwanis Club.

Ernie was one of the founders, or first to join, Fulton County Sheriff Reserves and served 34 years. He was president a couple of years. He was founder and first president of Fulton County Parks Department.

He started a Coleman Museum in 1985 at his home in a building that h e filled with lanterns, stoves, all kinds of Coleman items, even a Coleman motorbike. In 1983 he started a Coleman Collectors Club. He published the Coleman Collectors Courier for several years.

When the Akron Jonah Club disbanded in 1978, Ernie, a member of the club since 1962, bought their fish frying equipment. He continued to cook fish for the community to raise money for projects that ranged from helping with funeral expenses to helping the museum and churches and other groups. His fish fry truck burned at the Fulton County Museum in October 2010 but he rebuilt it and sold it in 2015.

Carolyn threw a party for his 80th birthday at the Fulton County Museum in 2014. More than 400 people attended.

I remember when Ernie was president of the Fulton County Historical Society in 1970. He was a charter member of the historical society from its beginning in 1963. He served on the society board of directors the last two years of his life. He was also a member of the Fulton County Historical Power Association and was in charge of the food vendors during their shows. He owned seven antique Allis Chalmers tractors.

On the political scene, Ernie was a member of the Richland Township election board, Richland Township Advisory Board, Fulton County Zoning Board – one of the first members – and the youngest member of Indiana Conservation Inc., for which he had an office in Indianapolis.

Ernie and Carolyn were blessed with two children, Gary and Cheryl. Ernie drove an Amish taxi for several years to help his Amish neighbors.

Ernie gave comedy programs, imitating Chick Sales on how to build an outhouse, and Charley Weaver. Dressed as an old-timer, he was hilarious . The last time I saw Ernie was when he was in Hickory Creek nursing home. His memory was perfect and he chatted with my husband Bill for more than an hour about old times and old friends. I gave him my Trail of Courage badge. He said he wanted a gooseberry pie, so I told Melinda Clinger. Her mother made a gooseberry pie for him and he was so happy. He refused to eat supper but had pie.

Anderson Lake is on Ernie’s farm on County Road 450 North about four miles west of U.S. 31. This is believed to be the site of one of Chief Aubbeenaubbee’s villages and the birthplace of Abram Burnett, who was on the 1838 Trail of Death. Ernie built a clubhouse at the lake and had reunions, picnics and meetings there.

I wish I had written down all the stories Ernie told me. He told of riding the school bus and the bus driver, William Miller, told of cemeteries no longer in existence. Ernie recalled the old Boy Scout camp a t the present Ruth Kern Nature Preserve, the busloads of scouts that came from Chicago to stay at the camp, so many, many stories.

I told him that he should write a book, but he never did.

So this is my tribute to Ernie Hiatt, an old friend and fellow historian. We will long reap the benefits from his life on this earth.

Obituary found on Find A Grave

Mr. Gene Hiatt, 72 of Rochester, passed away at 3:01 PM on Monday, November 16, 2015 at his farm.

On May 23, 1943, Nelson Gene born in Richland Township, a treasured son of Clarence L. and Charlotte McMillen Hiatt. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister and three brothers. Gene developed a life long passion for agriculture, spending his youth on the family farm. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 1962.

Pursuing his formal education, Gene studied at the Bemidji Bible Institute in Minnesota for three years. During this time he spent six months in the Holy Land, specifically Dothan, Jordan, as an archeologist studying archeology. Returning home he enrolled at Bethel College earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Gene continued his educ ation attaining a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of St. Francis in Ft. Wayne.

Mr. Hiatt taught elementary school in Winamac for seven years before refocusing his professional career as a full time farmer. During his teaching years, Gene kept his eyeout for a student who possessed the initial qualities of an underdog. It was a personal goal to elevate that student and arm him or her with leadership qualities making a change in their young lives.

In Plymouth, Gene married the love of his life and best friend, Jo Ruth Good on June 21, 1969. Together they shared more than 46 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced four wonderful children, Stephen , Michael, Miriam and Rachel. The blessing of another generation has been added to the family tree with ten grandchildren.

Gene’s passion for farming involved a wide a varied spectrum. From his family farm he annually led in the planting of a huge truck patch garden. The bountiful harvest was enjoyed by his family, but also his loyal customers at the Hiatt Garden Farm Market’s of Plymouth and Rochester and the South Bend Farmer’s Market. As an entrepreneure, he raised chickens and turkeys and opened a processing operation on his Richland Township homestead. From 1990 – 1997 Gene and his family owned and operated the Hiatt Ice Company.

For over four decades, Gene served as the South Bend Farmer’s Market as President. He was active with the Gideons International for many years, serving a zone leader. More recently he was a charter member of The Cross Church in Rochester where he worked on many committees. Gene was especially proud of the many short term missionary trips to Honduras, Escusla el Sanbrado. It was here that he taught the villiagers ho w to plant, maintain the crops and maximize the harvest of a truck pat ch garden. A lifelong teacher at heart he also taught them how to set up a poultry farm complete with processing operation. These gifts allowed the local farmers to be self-sustaining and independent.

Together Gene and Ruth raised four children who all contribute to our community. What a legacy he has left them, instilling basic values and many of the the ingredients to lead a successful, productive life . As a role model he demonstrated a strong work ethic, loyalty and ho w to maintain independence, just naming a few of life’s lessons. He had an uncanny ability to identify a weakness with his offspring and help them overcome, creating a new found strength.

Born with a birth defect to his right hand, Gene not only persevered b ut prevailed never allowing that to overcome him or stop his progress . He would make modifications re-inventing methods to accomodate that little hurdle. In his early years he was an accomplished basketball player, could clean and cut up a chicken faster or carry a five gallon bucket just like anyone. His positive attitude was unparalleled.

Left to cherish Gene’s memory are his loving wife Ruth; two daughters : Miriam Miller and husband Tim of Macy, Rachel Schnitz and husband Kyle of Rochester ; two sons: Stephen “Goose” Hiatt of Rochester, Michae l Hiatt and wife Julie of Rochester; 10 grandchildren: Maddison Hiatt , Mikayla Hiatt, Mallory Hiatt, Peyton Hiatt, Hannah Miller, Leah Miller, Rivkah Miller, Silas Miller, Emma Rae Schnitz, Ella Grace Schnitz ; a sister, Kathryn Hiatt, of Plymouth; two brothers: Pat Hiatt and wi fe Patty of Rochester, Phil Hiatt and wife Shirley of Plymouth; a sister-in-law, Carol Hiatt of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Gene in death are his parents, a grandchild, and a brother Ernest Hiatt on October 21, 2015.

Pastor Martin Furrow will officiate services. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
