Hayes Genealogy

I have had a problem locating more information on the Hayes family.  I was able to get information back to when Michael Hays came to the United States.  However, I know that they lived somewhere else before that time.  Michael and his family entered through a Canadian border point.

Martin Hayes    Sudden Death      Martin Hayse, who lives on Green Street, just west of the Canal, died suddenly yesterday at noon.  The deceased was complaining in the morning and did not go out to work as usual, but was about the house, and just before the time indicated he sent his son out to get some water, and when he came in, only a few moments later, the old gentleman was dead.  Mr. Hayse was an industrious man and had worked upon the streets for years.  It is thought that heart disease was the cause of his death.

Notes for Joseph Henry Hayes:   Joseph was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church – Lafayette, Indiana.   At the time of their marriage license, Joseph listed his occupation as “Showman” and Sophia as a Domestic.

On Jan. 19, 1894 Joseph was committed to the Asylum for the Poor of Allen County, Indiana. He was listed as insane (age 36). On May 10, 1899 a notation was made on page 284 of the Quarterly listing book stated that Joseph Hayes was sent to Indianapolis by his wife. He was back in Fort Wayne, Indiana by May 26, 1913. On page 97 of the quarter ending June 30, 1936, Joseph was listed as being returned from Richmond on May 6, 1936. On listing 290 the following is stated “Received the body of Joseph Hayes. Died April 14, 1942 @ 7:30 PM signed T Cahill”

According to The Fort Wayne Gazette (Fort Wayne, Indiana) dated January 17, 1899. It reads in part:

                             “INSANITY INQUIRY.

Joseph Hayes has been taken into custody by Sheriff Melching. For the past few days he has been acting in a queer manner and his hallucination is that he has torn down a large wall and that he found nothing but darkness on the other side of it.  An inquiry will be held on him to-day.”

According to the Fort Wayne Weekly Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana) dated January 18, 1899
page 3

Joseph Hayes is in custody of Sheriff Melching. He has been acting strangely for a few days and
when brought to the sheriff’s residence yesterday carried a stone in his hand. He imagines that
he has dorn down an immense wall and finds that all is darkness on the other side. An inquest
in lunacy may be held this afternoon.

An article found in the Fort Wayne Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana) dated July 14, 1900 Sophia Hayes filed for divorce from Joseph.

“Sophie Hayes petitions for a divorce from Joseph Hayes, also alleging cruel and inhuman treatment.  She claims that defendant struck, beat, kicked and choked her and called her vile names, falsely accusing her of intimacy with other men.  She asks for the c(u)stody of the children and for a sum sufficient to maintain them.”

The divorce between Sophia and Joseph Henry Hayes was granted in January 1901.  The Fort Wayne Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana) printed the following:

January 17, 1901 on page 2 – “NEWS GATHERED IN COURTS …. In the divorce case of Sophia Hayes vs. Joseph Hayes the defendant withdrew an appearance and defaulted.”

January 18, 1901 on page 1 – “This afternoon Sophia Hayes was granted a divorce from Joseph Hayes.  She was also awarded the custody of four minor children and the defendant was ordered to pay to her $10 per month for their support during their minority.”

According to an article appearing in the Fort Wayne News (Fort Wayne, Indiana) dated March 12, 1901 on page 5 – headline stated — WANDERED ABOUT ALL NIGHT

Last evening Officer Lavanway, who was on the Broadway beat, noticed a strange man walking
up and down the street. This was before midnight. About 3 o’clock in the morning he noticed the
stranger again on the promenade. He had evidently “carried the banner” all night, and as he
could not give a good account of himself he was sent to the station house. There he gave his
name as Joseph H. Hayes. He stated that he had been working at the poor farm and did not
receive any pay. A telephone message to the poor farm conveys the information that he was an
inmate of the institution and left there last night of his own accord, not to return. He was slightly
unbalance mentally, but, has never done any harm. The fact, that he walked the streets all last
night is an indication that he is not capable of taking care of himself. Mayor Schever released
him from custody last night.

According to the Fort Wayne Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana) dated March 12, 1901 on page 2 with the headline for the article – THURST FOR GORE, AND GLORY  the following was written:

“….. Joseph H. Hayes answered ‘not guilty’ in  a loud tone of voice as he was called up on a charge of vagrancy.  The arresting officer said he had found him promenading up and down Broadway from early in the evening until 3 o’clock last night, when the arrest was made.  Hayes said he was working at the poor farm and had been in town until late and he hated to go out to the county house and disturb the watchman at that time of night.  He talked very disconnectedly and the officers said that it was known fact that he is off his mental base.  The mayor told him go and return to the infirmary where he belonged.  He said he would.”

Obituary for Joseph Henry Hayes — 4/15/1942 – Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

Joseph Hayes, 75, died Tuesday night at the Allen county infirmary, where he had been a patient for six years. There are no known survivors.

Notes for Sophia Wilhemina Peters:  Oral family history: Joseph and Sophia were a Vaudeville team

Sophia divorced Joseph because he had become “violent”. Oral family history says he was put into Irene Byron Health Center about 1900 until his death, 14 April 1942. This means the WWI Louisianna residence status I have attached is void (unless the date of his hospitalization is in error). Sophia told the children that their father had died. Only the eldest (Walter, old enough to know what was happening at the time) knew that their father was still living, but that he “kept it quiet”. I have not read the divorce transcript. I have only heard this from another Parker/Hayes researcher who has copies of the transcript (available through public records in Allen Court House).
