According to notes that I found at the Danville, Indiana public library. Julia owned a farm which was located what is now 34th and High School road. Above her land was her daughter’s farm Sarah E. Jones Tomlinson and across from Julia’s farm was Andrew Jackson Jones’s farm. Charles Jones had a farm in the same area.


The information sheet that I received from the Danville, Indiana Public Library it states:

“Julia Ann Marvel was born in 1829 in Muskingum County, Ohio. she married Robert Dickerson on April 13, 1848. They were the parents of two children: Georgea, who died January 28, 1860 and Charles E. Dickerson. Robert Dickerson died March 4, 1856 and is buried at Crown Point Cemetery off Old Wilson Road in Marion county, Ind. Georgea is buried beside her father. Julia Ann and Robert Dickerson lived on Mississippi Street in Indianapolis near the State House. They lived over a store that the time was being used by the Masons. After Robert’s death, Julia Ann remained there for awhile; she over heard the entire Masonic Ritual as the results, she was accepted into the Masonic Lodge, one of two women to ever belong to all male Masonic Lodge.

This information has been in history books taught to school children some years ago. To confirm this: Julia Nelson Studebaker, great granddaughter of Julia Ann, discussed this information with the Masonic Lodge at Illinois Street and they admitted they had heard of Julia Ann as a member, but it was not entered into the early meetings. Later on, Mr. James Buchancan Watts, presented Ada Jones, as the granddaughter of Julia Ann Marvel Dickerson, woman member of the Masonic Lodge of Indianapolis. Julia Ann Marvel Dickerson married a second time to John Jones, a wealthy bachelor, on October 29, 1859. They were the parents of three children: Elizabeth, Sarah E. and Andrew Jackson Jones. Julia owned a farm which was located what is now 34th and High School road; above her land was her daughter’s farm Sarah E. Jones Tomlinson and above Sarah’s was Julia’s son Andrew Jackson Jones’s farm. Across from Julia Ann farm, was her son Charles E. Dickerson farm. Julia took care of her father, Robert Marvel, until his death; at this time she lived in Pike township, Marion County, Ind. Julia Ann and her husband, John Jones are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery off 38th Street, Indianapolis, Ind. The grave is situated across from President
Harrison’s grave site.

George W. Marvel came to Indiana in 1834 with his parents Robert and Sarah Marvel. He was raised on his father’s pioneer farm. His first marriage was to Sarah Dickerson. They settled on their own farm and raised 6 children. George ended up owning 155 acres in Brown township, Hendrick County. He worked as a plasterer while farming his land. Sarah Dickerson Marvel is buried beside her three daughters, Margaret, Ettie, and Clara in the Crown Point Cemetery off of Old Wilson Rd, in Marion County, Indiana. George married a second wife in Vigo County, Indiana in 1875 to Lucinda Watson. George and Lucinda are buried at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Brownsburg, Indiana.

Married March 6, 1853 to Sarah Dickerson; six children: Margaret, born Dec. 1853; Ettie, Dec. 28, 1855 (deceased) ; Clara, Jan. 10, 1861 (deceased); Frank, June 8, 1865; Ottie, June 15, 1869; Rose, b. May 22, 1875. He was also married to Lucinda Watson Nov. 8, 1875 in Vigo Co., Ind. Mrs. Marvel’s father settled in this county in 1829; lived here thirty years; moved to Marion County, where he died; his wife Elizabeth died on the homestead; both were members of the Christian Church. Mr. Marvel has a fine farm and excellent improvements.

“George W. Marvel is a native of Muskingum County, Ohio, born April 29, 1831, a son of Robert and Sarah Marvel, who came to Hendricks County, Indiana in 1835, and entered eighty acres of wild land in Brown Township. Here he was reared on a pioneer farm, receiving but a limited education. he is one of the prosperous citizens of Brown Township, and owns 155 acres of valuable land. When a young man he learned the plasterer’s trade, at which he has worked in connection with farming. Mr. Marvel was married in March, 1852, to Sarah Dickerson, and to them were born six children, but three of whom – Franklin P., Ottie M., and Rosa M. – are living. Margaret, Ettie and Clara are deceased. Mrs. Marvel died in May, 1875, and the following October Mr. Marvel married Lucinda Watson, of Vigo County, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. Marvel are members of the Christian church. “

David James Marvel died of Carbuncle on his left shoulder. Also between his left shoulder and neck. He was treated by Dr. J.W. Davis. The children and their birthdates is supplied by Mary Chestnut during a deposition for the a claim of pension increase for her father David J. Marvel. This is dated July 11, 1899. She stated that there existed a framed record of the births of the family. It was in the possession of Willliam Morton Marvel.

David J. Marvel enlisted in the Company K of the 79th Indiana Regiment of Vol. Infantry on August 21, 1862, to serve 3 years. According to the Certificate of Disability for Discharge – “he was born in Centerville in the State of Ohio is 29 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, grey
eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer.” Dated August 31st, 1863. Signed by Henry A. Mitchel at Louisville, Ky.

Mary L. Marvel (nee Wilson) was born November 22, 1834, in Hendricks County, Indiana, and departed this life June 3, 1924, having reached the age of 89 years, 6 months and 11 days. Mrs. Marvel spent her life in and around the late home, where on February 5, 1857 she was married to John Marvel, who preceded her in death eleven years ago. To this union were born eight children, five boys and three girls, of whom there are left to mourn her demise, one daughter, Mrs. Frank Gardner, and two sons, Canada H. and Everett E. Mrs. Marvel was a life long member of the Macedonia M.E. Church. Funeral services ere conducted by Rev. Homer Dale, at the Christian Church at Traders Point, June 5th with interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful

“John Marvel grew up on his father’s farm and always devoted his attention to agriculture. He was one of the successful farmers of Brown Township. He married Mary L. Wilson in 1859. They bought an 80 acre farm and the improvements they made on it were among the best in the township. It was just north of his father’s farm and 40 acres of it is now a part of the De Wiltt Brown place on the north side of 56th Street and the other 40 is now on the south side of 86th Street owned by Mr. Oertly. Mr. and Mrs. John Marvel had eight children, among whom were Annie and Everett. Annie married Frank Gardner and Everett marred Alice Mark, a school teacher. She taught in several of the one-room schools of the township. The had three children, Elsie (Mrs. Gus White of 322 North Green Street, Brownsburg), Clarence Marvel of Wilson Road, and Elnora (Mrs. Clarence Vice of Brownsburg).
John Marvel was a well known horse breeder. He was so proud of the crops he raised that he always entered them at the Indiana State Fair which he attended every year. His garden produce and grains of the field won him many blue ribbons and premiums. The family were members of the Macedonia M.E. Church, John died on his farm at the age of 75 years”

“John Marvel was born in Hendricks County, Ind., Feb. 10, 1837, a son of Robert and Sarah Marvel, early settlers of Brown Township. He was reared in his native county, receiving but a limited education, as his services were early required at home. He has always devoted his attention to agriculture, and is one of the representative successful famers of the township. He owns a fine farm of eighty acres, and his improvements are among the best in the township. He was married in February, 1859, to Mary L. Wilson, and to them have been born eight children, but of whom are living – Canada, Evert and Annie.”

Danville, Indiana Over the County – The home of John Marvel, three miles southeast of Brownsburg, burned Sunday, April 16. All the contents were burned as no one was at home. Marvel had about $900 of insurance. The origin of the fire is unknown.

Mrs. Mary M. Hough — Mary M., daughter of Robert and Sarah Marvel, was born January 27, 1843, in Hendricks County, Indiana and died January 18, 1927 at the home of her son Albert at Indianapolis, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 23 days. She was united in marriage to George W. Hough in July 1867, soon after the close of the Civil War. To this union was born 7 children all of whom are living, Willie, Albert, Fred, Laura Herring, Sallie Beasley, Minnie Eck, and Isa (Icy) Wilson. Her husband having preceded her in death almost 20 years ago. She was next to the youngest of a large family, all of whom have preceded her in death. She was a charter member of the first Sunday School class of Macedonia and in young woman-hood cast her membership with that church. Besides these children she leaves to mourn her departure, 23 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral Services were conducted by Eld. R. A. Fuson from the M.E Church at 11:00 a.m. last Thursday.

Marvel, Joseph, P.O. Box Trader’s Point, Marion County,; Farmer, section 30; born June 25, 1845; Son of Robert and Nancy Marvel. Married December 31, 1863 to Miss Wilson, of this township; four children: Charles E. and Ida E. (twins), born 9 25 1864 ; Mary A. born 12 29, 1867; Cora L, born 12 27, 1870, Mr. Marvel served in the 7th Ind. Vols. Is now engaged in clearing a farm for himself in the woods. He has a fine family of children, and is a worthy citizen.

Josiah Marvel was a non-commissioned officer in – private – in the Seventh Indiana Infantry for three years. Company H. Josiah was eighteen when he enlisted in the 7th Indiana Regiment of Indiana. While in Cumberland, Maryland, he contracted typhoid fever, which developed into rheumatism and chronic diarrhea. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1862. He returned to Hendricks County and again began farming.

The 7th Indiana saw service throughout the Civil War in the Eastern Theater, especially in the (Shenandoah) Valley Campaign, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

According to the Indiana State Digital Archives – Military Records – Civil War – Statewide — Josiah Marvel enlisted at the age of 18 on 09/12/1861 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was discharged 07/01/1862. He was a member of Regiment 7 Company H.

Mrs. Nancy Marvel Dies
Brownsburg Woman, 86, Spent Entire Life in Hendricks County.
Mrs. Nancy Marvel, age eighty-six, a lifelong resident of Hendricks county, died Thursday at her home in Brownsburg. The funeral was held Friday at 2 p.m. at her home in Brownsburg and burial was in he Brownsburg cemetery. She is survived by five children, Charley and Harlan Marvel and Mrs. Ida Ruse, Mrs. Alice Wilson and Mrs. Cora Weaver, eighteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren.

NANCY MARVEL
Nancy Wilson, daughter of John and Sarah Wilson, was born in Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. Oct 4, 1843. She was one of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceded her in death, except one, Angeline of the soldiers Home in Lafayette. She lived at the family home with her parents until her marriage to Josiah Marvel on Dec. 31, 1863. To this union was born five children, Ida Ruse and Cora Weaver of Indianapolis, Alice Wilson and Charlie of Brownsburg and Harlen of Traders Point. In their early married life she with her husband united with the Old Ebenezer Christian Church at Trader’s Point, but after moving to Brownsburg in 1903, they moved their membership to the Christian Church here. The husband died almost sixteen years ago, since which time she has lived alone. She had been in failing health for some time but had been able to be around the house until last Saturday when she fell, fracturing her arm. Her feable condition could not stand the shock and she gradually grew worse until she passed away, Thursday morning Nov. 14 at 4:30 aged 86 years, 1 month and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her departure five children, eighteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
