Jerry Fisher never imagined the consequences of writing what is widely recognized as the premier biography (there are three) of his relative, Carl Graham Fisher when his book, “The Pacesetter,” was published in 1998. His original objective was to pay tribute to a truly remarkable man whose contributions to shaping the American way of life in the 20th Century…. Known to some as “Mr. Miami Beach,” Carl was an indomitable entrepreneur whose accomplishments ranged from delivering the first viable automobile headlight to founding the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, developing Miami Beach, establishing New York’s Montauk resort
community and leading the effort to build the first transcontinental highways – leading some to call him “the father of our modern freeway system.” Those were just his biggest ideas. Few know of Carl or his contributions. Few, except for those that have read Jerry Fisher’s book.
Carl Fisher’s father Albert had deserted his family when Carl was very young. Carl Fisher endured crisis late in life when his empire was decimated by his massive losses in Florida real estate value in the 1920’s.

Although Fisher’s legacy looms large on the American landscape, he as a person remains a historical footnote. He made a fortune in Indiana during the first decade of the 1900s as one of the first manufacturers of automobile headlights. He helped build the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and prodded the construction of both the Lincoln and Dixie highways. Fisher’s grandest scheme, though, transformed Miami Beach into a luxury resort from a swampy island anchored by mangroves in 1913. But a hurricane wiped out much of what he had built in 1926, and he lost most of his fortune in the stock market crash of 1929; he died 10 years later. Jane Fisher, his much younger first wife, to whom he had remained close, wrote a loving, laudatory biography, Fabulous Hoosier (1947). Now Foster, a history professor who has written several books highlighting the role of transportation in American culture, does an excellent and thorough job of summing up, spotlighting Fisher’s achievements and filling in the details of his personal life. He graduated from Manual High School in 1940 before attending Butler University. John spent time in the Army Air Corps as a 1st Lt. Pilot in World War II. He was decorated with an Air Medal with 4 Clusters, European Theatre Medal with 4 battle Stars, President Unit Citation and Victory Medal. John spent 37 years at Indiana Bell in many capacities including assistant vice president of personnel and general
manager of business services. In 1976, he served as president of Hoovier Chapter Telephone Pioneers. He was the former director and treasurer of WFYI channel 20 and the Little Red Door, as well as former director of the Indianapolis Indians Baseball team. He was a former member of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee and 1970 chairman of “Christmas on the Circle” committee. John was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 3433 and The Service Club of Indianapolis. A funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Saturday, August 27 at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, 91st & Haverstick. Funeral services for Harold L. Marvel, 51 years old, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Conkle West 16th Street Funeral Home, with burial in Floral Park Cemetery. Mr. Marvel, a Diamond Chain Company Inc., engineer, died Friday in St. Vincent’s Hospital. His home was at 6932 Spring Mill Road. Born in Hendricks County, he had lived at Speedway 45 years, moving to the Spring Mill road address recently. He had been on Diamond Chain’s engineering staff 25 years. Mr. Marvel was a member of the Purdue

A former principal who for years tutored Brownsburg schoolchildren even though he was blind died Tuesday morning at Methodist Hospital. He was Charles Hassel Marvel, 62 years old. Born April 7, 1900, at Traders Point, Mr. Marvel was a 1917 graduate of New Augusta High School and attended Central Normal College at Danville and Ball State Teachers College. He became a teacher and principal at a school near Kokomo, one at Traders Point, and elementary schools in Clermont and Ben Davis. After he became blind in 1929, he retired in the Brownsburg area and voluntarily tutored
local children. He also was active in the Democatic Pary there. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 9 p.m. today at Jones and Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg. Requiem mass will be sung at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Malachy Church there. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Genevieve Maloney Marvel; two daughters, Mrs. Ilene Landregan of des Plaines, Ill., and Mrs. Becky Hicks of Leanon; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Everett of Brownsburg, and a brother, John Marvel of Indianapolis, and five

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Conkle West 16th Street Funeral Home. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.
